THE PHRASE AND THE CLAUSE
1. In the morning ' (प्रात: में) शब्दों का समूह है, किन्तु इससे पूर्ण अर्थ व्यक्त नहीं है। शब्दों का ऐसा समूह जो पूर्ण अर्थ न व्यक्त करता हो, Phrase (वाक्यांश) कहलाता है। नीचे लिखे वाक्य में bold शब्दसमूह वाक्यांश है:-
- The sun sets in the west.
- He was standing on the wall.
- It was the morning of great beauty.
- Tell me how to do it.
2. अब नीचे लिखे वाक्यों के bold शब्द समूह को देखे :-
(i)He has aring of gold.
(ii)He hasaring which is made of gold.
पहले वाक्य में 'of gold' वाक्यांश (phrase) है। दूसरे वाक्य में 'of gold' वाक्यांश के स्थान पर कर्ता (which) और विधेय (predicate ) ' is made of gold' आया है।
शब्दों का ऐसा समूह जो किसी वाक्य का अंश हो तथा जिसमें subject और Predicate हो, उपवाक्य (clause) कहलाता है। नीचे लिखे वाक्यों में bold शब्दों के समूह उपवाक्य है :-
- People who are hard working get success.
- We cannot start while it is raining.
- I think that you have done well.

7.He is very generous to all. | Wait till I am ready. |
8.She found me in the crowd. | While Sita is very good at Mathematics, her brother is hopeless. |
9.The mango trees are in blossom. | He moved to Manpur where he lived three months. |
10.Our friendship blossomed into love. |
